Planning a Korea summer vacation in 2026? This guide covers Korea’s top summer festivals, beaches, valleys, island trips, cultural traditions, peak-season travel tips, packing essentials, and quieter destinations for international travelers.

From Lively Festivals to Beaches, Valleys, and Quiet Healing Getaways
Summer in Korea begins in earnest as July arrives.
Temperatures hover around 35°C, and the weather is so hot and humid that sweat can start running even when you are simply standing still. In Korea, a country with four distinct seasons, July and August are special months devoted to enduring and escaping the summer heat.
Koreans restore their energy on Boknal, the traditional hottest days of summer, by eating nourishing dishes such as samgyetang. They also coordinate dates with family or friends and prepare for a summer vacation away from everyday life.
Small shops and companies may close completely for several days, while larger companies divide vacation dates so employees can take turns going away. Families match the children’s school holiday with the parents’ time off, couples compare their schedules, and friends spend days making noise in group chats as they decide where to travel.

Splashing water, laughter, and meat sizzling on a barbecue grill—
these may be the true sounds of a Korean summer vacation.
INDEX
That is why the whole country seems to come alive in July and August.
Some people head for the beach, some search for valleys, some visit amusement parks and water parks, some spend their holiday at pensions and campsites, and others pull suitcases through the airport on their way abroad.
If I had to choose the sounds heard most often at a Korean summer vacation destination, they would probably be the splash of someone jumping into the water, laughter bursting out from every direction, and meat sizzling on a barbecue grill.
Of course, when everyone gathers at the same famous destinations, a vacation can turn into a small war.

Highways become congested, parking spaces disappear, and long lines form outside popular restaurants. Traveling by car can sometimes waste even more time. Visitors may find themselves competing not only for accommodation, train tickets, express-bus seats, and ferry tickets, but even for a tiny patch of shade on the beach.
A trip planned as a peaceful escape may feel more like a survival game when you meet a much larger crowd than expected.
For an international traveler, however, this chaotic and noisy atmosphere can be a fascinating experience.
The sight of huge groups gathering to play in the water, share food, and enjoy music reveals exactly how Koreans celebrate summer.
There is a sense of order and consideration within the crowd, and a distinctly Korean excitement within all the noise.
So what if it is a little chaotic?
That, too, is Korea, and it may become a memory you will continue talking about long after the trip is over.

Korean Summer Vacation Began with Piseo

Today, Koreans usually use the expression “summer vacation,” but people have long used the word 피서 [Pi-seo], meaning an escape to a cool place to avoid the heat. In the past, piseo was not an elaborate trip involving hotels or resorts.
People went to nearby riverbanks, small streams, mountain valleys, or the shade of a large tree. They cooled themselves by placing their feet in flowing cold water and shared food and fruit brought from home.
The traditional method of cooling the feet in cold valley or stream water is called 탁족 [Tak-jok]. It has long been enjoyed as a summer custom because placing only the feet in the water can make the whole body feel cooler.
There was also a tradition called 천렵 [Cheon-ryeop], in which people caught fish in rivers and streams, played in the water, cooked what they caught, and shared the meal.
Traditional Korean summer recreation was ultimately completed by three things: Cool water, nature, and food shared together. Travel styles and accommodation have become far more diverse, but that basic form has not changed greatly.
If there is cold water and shade, watermelon and good food, and family or friends to enjoy it with, that alone can complete a Korean-style summer vacation.
A SHORT HISTORY OF KOREAN SUMMER
From Riverside Picnics to Mass-Market Summer Vacations

In the 1950s and 1960s, many people visited nearby riverbanks and streams, the Han River area, Ttukseom Recreation Area, and public swimming pools.
They packed a picnic mat and lunch, prepared watermelon and Korean melon, left in the morning, and returned in the evening after a simple one-day escape from the heat.
People who could travel farther took trains and buses to beaches such as Daecheon, Songdo, and Haeundae.
The word “vacance,” borrowed from French, became widely used in Korea from the 1970s.
As the economy grew and travel became easier, enormous crowds gathered at famous beaches and recreation areas. Traffic congestion, competition for space, excessive tourist prices, and litter—problems that still return every summer—also began to appear more seriously during this period.
The sight of a pleasant vacation turning into a battle is not a recent development.
In the 1980s and 1990s, family travel became more common as private cars became widely available. Condominiums and resorts joined beaches and valleys as new summer vacation choices.

After the 2000s, accommodation became more diverse with pensions, campsites, and glamping sites. People now plan holidays around their own interests, including surfing, rafting, performances, and festivals, rather than simply escaping the heat beside the water.
Travel has changed with the times, but the desire to leave everyday life, eat well, rest somewhere cool, and spend time with people you value remains the same.
SEA · MOUNTAINS · VALLEYS
A Summer Vacation Culture Shaped by Three Seas and Countless Mountains

Korea is a peninsula surrounded by sea on three sides, and much of the country is mountainous. This means that beaches, islands, rivers, valleys, forests, and lakes can all be reached without traveling an enormous distance.
Gangneung and Yangyang on the east coast are famous for blue water, wide beaches, refreshing waves, and surfing. Taean, Boryeong, and Buan on the west coast offer beautiful sunsets, tidal flats, and island trips.
Tongyeong, Yeosu, and Namhae on the south coast offer countless islands, calm multi-island scenery, and fresh seafood.
The mountainous inland areas also have many valleys filled with cold running water. Thick shade and clear valley streams provide a natural retreat from Korea’s hot and humid summer.
Rivers and lakes are loved as destinations for one-day picnics, camping, walks, and mul-meong—quietly zoning out while watching the water. A Korea summer vacation therefore does not mean only going to the beach.
Mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, islands, and harbors can all become Korean summer vacation destinations.
WHO ARE YOU TRAVELING WITH?
The Trip Changes Depending on Who Comes with You
Even during the same summer season, destinations and travel styles can change greatly depending on who is traveling together.

With Family
Families with young children value accessibility and convenient facilities.
They prefer beaches where the water is not too deep, campsites with children’s pools, or pensions with swimming pools and easy access to parking, toilets, and shower facilities.
A typical family summer vacation includes playing in the water with the children during the day and returning to the accommodation for a shared evening meal.
The time a family spends eating and laughing together can remain in the memory longer than the number of attractions they visited.
With Friends
Trips with friends usually focus more on activities and play than on quiet relaxation.
Friends seek active destinations such as the Boryeong Mud Festival, surfing in Yangyang, rafting, and water sports. They may rent a large pension where everyone can stay together, grill meat, listen to music, and talk until late at night.
The body may become even more tired, but the charm of traveling with friends is returning with funny photographs and plenty of stories to laugh about.
With a Partner
Couples consider scenery and atmosphere just as important as activities.
Good choices include a west coast sunset, an east coast sunrise, a café overlooking the sea, ocean-view accommodation, a ferry trip to an island, or a quiet lakeside walking path.
Gangneung is good for enjoying the sea and cafés together, while Tongyeong combines a harbor, islands, seafood, and night scenery in one trip.
For Group Travel
When several families, alumni, club members, or coworkers travel together, a shared place to stay can matter more than the tourist attractions themselves.
Groups prefer private pensions with large living rooms and spacious yards, swimming pools, foot-volleyball courts, and group barbecue areas.
Instead of rushing around several attractions, gathering at the accommodation to eat and talk may become the center of the journey.
When There Is Time for Only a Day Trip
Not everyone can take several days off.
In Korea, 당일치기 [Dang-il-chi-gi], a trip completed within one day, is also a familiar summer vacation style.
People visit places with water and shade, such as the Hantan River, a nearby valley, or a riverside park, and spread out a picnic mat. They cool their feet in the water, cut a watermelon, and share lunch and snacks brought from home.
A luxury hotel is not necessary.
Flowing water, tree shade, a picnic mat, and watermelon are enough to create a summer vacation atmosphere.
A CLASSIC KOREAN SUMMER
The Korean Summer Vacation Completed by a Valley, a Pension, and a Barbecue

The Korean use of the word “pension” may be unfamiliar to international travelers.
In Korea, a pension does not mean a retirement payment. It refers to small holiday accommodation located near tourist destinations such as beaches, mountains, and valleys.
Many pensions have a simple kitchen inside the room and barbecue facilities on a terrace or in a shared space. Families, friends, and larger groups often choose them because everyone can stay together in one room or private house.
A typical valley pension trip has a different mood during the day and at night. During the day, everyone changes into clothes for the water and walks down to the valley. Children play on tubes, while adults sit under trees or on rocks and place their feet in the cold water.
Watermelon, Korean melon, and drinks carried in an icebox are taken out and shared. After the water activities finish, everyone returns to the accommodation, showers, and prepares the barbecue.

Pork belly, beef, sausages, mushrooms, onions, and kimchi are grilled together. People drink beer or soft drinks, listen to music, and continue conversations they rarely have in daily life until late at night.
A Korean valley trip does not end when the swimming stops. The second half of the journey begins when everyone gathers around the barbecue grill. Today, however, visitors cannot light fires and grill meat beside just any valley or river.
Many places prohibit cooking, camping, and the use of fire in order to protect rivers and forests. Barbecues should be enjoyed only at facilities provided by a pension, an official campsite, or another designated cooking area.
SHORT · CLOSE · DEEPLY ENJOYED
2026 Korea Summer Vacation Trends

The 2026 Korea summer vacation trend can be summarized as short, close, and deeply enjoyed.
Many people choose short domestic trips of one or two nights rather than spending a long period traveling far away.
Instead of rushing through many attractions, they place greater importance on resting fully and recovering in places such as beaches, valleys, mountain villages, and small cities.
There is, however, an amusing contradiction.
Many people want a nearby domestic trip, but they travel to the same famous places on similar dates. Beaches, valleys, accommodation, restaurants, and highways all become crowded, especially from late July to early August.
For this reason, more travelers are searching for places slightly outside famous centers or for beaches and valleys that remain comparatively less well known.
Playcation

A playcation does not mean simply staying at accommodation and resting. It means spending a vacation immersed in a favorite hobby or activity.
Surfing in Yangyang, enjoying the Boryeong Mud Festival, and taking an island trip in Tongyeong are representative examples.
For some people, a vacation is a time to do absolutely nothing. For others, it is a time to run, play, and release energy with the entire body.
Mul-meong, Sup-meong, and Bul-meong

Another popular form of rest is stepping away from fast city life and smartphones and simply looking at one place without thinking.
물멍 [Mul-meong] means resting while watching the sea, a river, a valley, or a lake.
숲멍 [Sup-meong] means clearing the mind while looking at trees and thick forest.
불멍 [Bul-meong] means quietly letting go of thoughts while watching a campfire or burning wood.
A Korea summer vacation is ultimately completed by three things:
A cool natural setting and a place to stay, activities and food shared together, and the chance to temporarily release the fatigue of everyday life.
Choose Your Summer Theme
Representative Korean Summer Destinations for International Travelers
Koreans travel to many different places, including beaches, valleys, islands, and festivals.
It is difficult to say that one destination is always the best. First consider what kind of trip you enjoy, and then choose a destination based on the theme you would most like to experience.
FEATURED KOREA SUMMER DESTINATION
Boryeong Mud Festival
Korea’s Summer Energy Experienced with the Entire Body
The Boryeong Mud Festival is one of Korea’s representative summer festivals, combining the mud of Daecheon Beach with water activities, interactive experiences, and performances.
The 2026 festival will be held around Daecheon Beach from July 24 to August 9.
Experience zones include a large mud pool, mud slides, and inflatable attractions where visitors can enjoy mud with their entire bodies. A children’s zone and water-play areas are also operated for families, while performances and various programs continue into the evening.
The festival’s greatest attraction is that anyone can easily join in regardless of nationality or language.
Once you cover yourself in mud, play games with people you have just met, get sprayed with water, and laugh together, the distance between strangers quickly disappears.
Do not, however, expect a quiet healing retreat.
During peak season, the festival grounds, accommodation, transportation, and shower facilities can become extremely busy. Reserve tickets and accommodation in advance and, when possible, arrive early.
Prepare a swimsuit or rash guard that can get dirty, a change of clothes, a waterproof phone pouch, and waterproof sunscreen.

FEATURED KOREA SUMMER DESTINATION
Tongyeong
A City Where Harbors, Markets, Islands, and Seafood Are Alive
Tongyeong is one of the south coast’s representative destinations, combining beautiful harbor scenery, markets, mural villages, and island trips.
Freshly caught fish and seafood can be found around Tongyeong Jungang Market and Gangguan Harbor. The energy of the market and the sight of fishing boats entering and leaving the harbor provide a different kind of enjoyment from simply touring polished attractions.
Climb to Dongpirang Mural Village on the hill above Gangguan to look down across Tongyeong Harbor and the islands of the southern sea.
From Tongyeong Passenger Ferry Terminal, you can leave for islands with very different characters, including Hansando, Bijindo, and Yokjido.
Chungmu gimbap and Tongyeong honey bread are also difficult to miss on a trip here.
Chungmu gimbap is a Tongyeong-style dish in which rice wrapped in seaweed is eaten separately with radish kimchi and a spicy fish-cake and squid salad. Tongyeong honey bread is a sweet snack and a popular travel gift.
The Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival, commemorating Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s victory at the Battle of Hansan, will be held from August 12 to 16, 2026.
Performances and historical programs make Tongyeong’s summer even more energetic during the festival. On the other hand, accommodation, restaurants, the harbor, and the market can become extremely crowded, so reserve early and plan your route in advance.
When planning an island trip, check the return ferry before the outbound ferry. Summer ferry services can change or sell out because of weather and passenger demand.

Gangneung and Yangyang
An East Coast Summer of Seaside Cafés and Surfing
Gangneung and Yangyang are both on the east coast, but their travel atmospheres are slightly different.
Gangneung, the City of Sea and Coffee
Gangneung combines blue water, walking paths, cafés, and local food.
At the coffee street on Anmok Beach, visitors can enjoy coffee while looking out at the sea. Gyeongpo Beach and Gangmun Beach offer wide sand and the refreshing East Sea.
Tasting local Gangneung food such as Chodang soft tofu and spicy jang-kalguksu noodles is another pleasure of the journey.
Gangneung is a good fit for couples or families who enjoy seaside walks and café tours, and for international travelers visiting Korea’s east coast for the first time.
Yangyang, the City of Surfing and Music
Yangyang has recently become one of Korea’s youngest and most active summer destinations.
The areas around Jukdo Beach and Ingu Beach have many surf schools where beginners can learn easily. Boards and wetsuits can be rented, allowing travelers without equipment to try immediately.
Ride the waves during the day and enjoy music and a lively atmosphere at restaurants and bars around the beach in the evening.
Yangyang is well suited to travelers who want a playcation filled with surfing, music, people, and energy rather than a quiet holiday.
Gangneung and Yangyang are also places where Korea’s peak summer season can be felt most intensely from late July to early August.
On Friday evenings and weekends, highways and local roads become congested, and parking areas, cafés, and accommodation around the beaches become extremely crowded. Accommodation directly beside the beach is convenient, but prices are higher and noise may continue until late at night.
For a quieter stay, choose accommodation about 10 to 15 minutes by car from the main beaches.

BEYOND THE BIG NAMES
Other Korean Summer Vacation Destinations

Korea has an enormous number of travel destinations.
Some may be inconvenient to reach by public transportation, so international travelers should allow a little more time and make a careful plan.
Broadly speaking, Korean seaside destinations can be divided into the east, west, and south coasts.
Each coast has a different character and atmosphere.
- Gureumpo Beach, Taean: A small beach that is good for enjoying a west coast sunset
- Gusan Beach, Uljin: A place to enjoy both the sea and the shade of the pine forest behind the beach
- Wido Island, Buan: An island reached by ferry where travelers can experience a slower rhythm of life
Valleys and Forests

- Saldun Valley, Hongcheon: A natural summer destination for clear valley water and camping
- Piagol Valley, Gurye: A place for quiet walks beside a valley through thick forest
- Baengnyeonsa Temple and Dasan Chodang, Gangjin: A destination combining history and a forest walk
- Busodamak, Okcheon: A place for a slow walk while viewing a lake and unusual rocky cliffs
All of these places are already known, so they can become even busier on weekends.
It is best to plan a weekday visit whenever possible.
LESS WAITING, MORE SUMMER
How to Travel a Little More Comfortably During Peak Season
Travel on Weekdays
Friday evenings and Saturday mornings are the busiest times for people heading to vacation destinations. When possible, travel between Monday and Thursday.
Visit Early in the Morning
Beaches, markets, parking areas, and festival grounds are relatively relaxed in the morning before the main crowds arrive.
Check Festival Dates First
Visit during the event period when you want to enjoy a festival, but avoid those dates when your goal is quiet sightseeing.
Choose Accommodation Slightly Outside the Center
Accommodation directly in front of a beach is convenient, but it can be expensive and noisy. Choosing a place 10 to 20 minutes from the center can provide a more comfortable stay.
Change Your Mealtime
Popular restaurants are especially crowded at noon and in the evening. Eat an early lunch around 11:00 a.m. or dine after 2:00 p.m. to reduce waiting time.
Check the Return Ferry First for Island Trips
If you miss the last ferry, you may be forced to stay overnight on the island. Confirm the return time before planning how to get there.

YUNI’S SMART TRAVEL TIPS
Smart Travel Tips for International Visitors
Major tourist destinations often provide good English information, but small beaches, valleys, island villages, and local restaurants may have limited English guidance.
Read Signs with Google Lens
Use the camera to translate Korean menus, information boards, bus signs, and ferry notices.
Navigate with Naver Map
In Korea, Naver Map is the app to use. It is convenient for checking walking, public transportation, and driving routes.
Instead of asking AI to guess the current traffic situation, show it the routes displayed on Naver Map and ask which option has fewer transfers or requires less walking.
Ask AI to Interpret Timetables
Photograph a Korean ferry timetable and ask a question such as:
“What is the latest ferry on this timetable that returns to the mainland?”
However, same-day cancellations and schedule changes caused by bad weather must always be confirmed again with the harbor, ferry operator, or official website.
Use the 1330 Korea Travel Helpline
When you need help with transportation, interpretation, or tourist information, use the Korea Tourism Organization’s 1330 Korea Travel Helpline.

What You Must Remember at Valleys and Rivers
Korean valleys may look clear and shallow but can suddenly become dangerous.
July, August, and September are also the months when typhoons can pass through Korea.
Check weather information before visiting so that sudden rain does not ruin the trip.
Even when it is not raining where you are, heavy rain higher in the mountains can cause valley water to rise quickly.
Barbecuing and cooking are also not permitted everywhere. First confirm that you are using an official campsite, a designated pension facility, or another area where cooking is allowed.
LOUD & LIVELY · QUIET & SLOW
Which Korean Summer Would You Like to Experience?
Korea’s famous summer vacation destinations are popular for a reason.
At the Boryeong Mud Festival, you can cover yourself in mud and laugh with thousands of other people.
In Tongyeong, you can experience harbors, markets, islands, seafood, and a historical festival together.
In Gangneung and Yangyang, you can enjoy a young summer culture combining the sea, coffee, surfing, and music.
Of course, there are crowds.
For international travelers, however, the crowds, noise, and atmosphere of everyone laughing and enjoying the moment together can become an experience found only in Korea.
One day, you can celebrate with thousands of people at a festival. The next, you can sit beside a quiet beach or valley and enjoy mul-meong.
The greatest attraction of a Korea summer vacation is the ability to choose both a lively summer and a quiet one.
For one person, true rest may be a silent forest path.
For another, true rest may be grilling meat with friends, playing in the water until every piece of clothing is soaked, and spending time on a beach filled with laughter.
