Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory: A New Free View in 2026

A practical guide to Seoul’s newest free downtown viewpoint — plus the gallery, café, underground cultural space, and the nearby Jeong-dong Observatory.

Free Entry No Reservation Weekdays Only City Hall Station

A new viewpoint opened in central Seoul in July 2026. The Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory is free, requires no advance reservation, and sits directly above one of the busiest sightseeing areas in the city.

This is not a destination that needs half a day. The Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory works best as a short stop between Deoksugung Palace, Gwanghwamun, Jeong-dong, and Seoul Plaza — especially when you want a free indoor break with a city view.

A New Free Observatory Inside Seoul City Hall

What you can see

The Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory opened in July 2026 on the west side of the 8th and 9th floors of Seoul City Hall’s main building. From here, the view mixes palace roofs, civic squares, modern office towers, and the mountains beyond the city center.

To the south are Deoksugung Palace, Jeong-dong, Seoul Plaza, and the direction of Sungnyemun Gate. To the north are Gwanghwamun Plaza and Bugaksan Mountain. That mix is what makes this free observatory in Seoul interesting: you are not simply looking down from a skyscraper; you can read the shape of central Seoul.

ADDRESS 110 Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul Seoul City Hall Main Building

City Hall Station serves Subway Lines 1 and 2, and the first floor is directly connected to Exit 5. Because this is a working government building rather than a stand-alone tourist attraction, check the official schedule again before visiting.

If you are already visiting the Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory, there is no need to leave immediately after taking in the view.

The 8th floor includes Sky Plaza Gallery, while the 9th floor directory lists Happy Plus Cafe alongside the Sky Observatory. Together they make a simple sequence:

View Exhibition Short Break

Downstairs, Seoul City Hall has another space worth knowing about. Seoul Gallery reopened on February 5, 2026, across basement levels B1 and B2.

Exhibitions & Performance
City stories, cultural programs,
and public events.
Robot Cafe &
Seoul Bookstore
A casual indoor stop between
sightseeing areas.
Seoul My Soul Shop
City-brand goods plus family-friendly
public spaces.

For August 2026, the official schedule lists Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 21:00. From September 2026, the listed hours change to 09:00 to 19:00. It is closed on Sundays and major traditional holidays.

On a very hot or rainy day, the Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory and Seoul Gallery can work together as an easy indoor break in the middle of a downtown walking route.

Don’t Confuse It With Jeong-dong Observatory

Two observatories, one neighborhood

The Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory is not the same place as Jeong-dong Observatory.

The new observatory is in the main Seoul City Hall building on the 8th and 9th floors. Jeong-dong Observatory is on the 13th floor of the Seoul City Hall Seosomun Building and has long been known for its view over Deoksugung Palace and the historic Jeong-dong area.

Which one should you visit?

For a first visit, the Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory is the simpler choice if you are already around Seoul Plaza or Deoksugung on a weekday.

If you are in the area on Saturday or Sunday, remember that the new observatory is closed on weekends. In that case, check the current Jeong-dong Observatory schedule instead.

Add It to a Central Seoul Walking Day

An easy 30-minute stop

Illustrated central Seoul walking route from Deoksugung Palace to Seoul City Hall, Seoul Plaza, and Jeongdong-gil

I would not build an entire sightseeing day around the Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory. Its real advantage is how easily it fits into places travelers already visit.

Or, if you are coming from Gwanghwamun:
Gwanghwamun Plaza Seoul City Hall Deoksugung Palace Jeong-dong Street

Everything is close enough that you do not need a special detour.

Or, if you are coming from Gwanghwamun: Gwanghwamun Plaza → Seoul City Hall → Deoksugung Palace → Jeong-dong Street. Everything is close enough that you do not need a special detour.

YUNI’S TIP

I would add the Seoul City Hall Sky Observatory as a 30-minute stop on a day spent around Deoksugung, Jeong-dong, or Gwanghwamun.

It is free, indoors, and gives you a useful visual map of central Seoul before you continue walking. Just remember the most important detail: the new observatory is currently closed on weekends, so check official hours before you go.
