It is the holiday season, yet even I feel it is better to stay indoors where there is air conditioning than to travel far. A short walk outside can leave your clothes soaked with sweat, and even a ten-minute distance that normally feels easy can demand a lot of energy.

For international visitors, the situation can feel even more difficult. You came all the way to Seoul and cannot stay in the hotel all day—but walking on hot streets from morning to night is not realistic either.

This Seoul Heatwave Guide is not about moving quickly through as many sights as possible. It is about choosing one district—Gangnam, Seongsu, Hongdae, or Yongsan—then shopping, seeing an exhibition, eating, and resting properly within that area.

During a Seoul heatwave, the realistic plan is to choose only one district for the day, stay indoors from noon to 5 p.m., and add only a short outdoor stop after the sun becomes gentler. That is the basic principle of this Seoul Heatwave Guide.

The Most Comfortable Summer District

Gangnam and Samseong are the easiest places to move around in this Seoul Heatwave Guide. From Samseong Station or Bongeunsa Station, COEX Mall lets you handle food, cafés, shopping, Starfield Library, cinemas, and exhibitions in one complex.

Arrive at COEX around 11 a.m., look around Starfield Library, and have lunch inside the building. In the afternoon, choose one or two from an exhibition, aquarium, film, or shopping, then rest properly at a café around 4 p.m. Rather than trying to see every event, this Seoul Heatwave Guide recommends choosing one event that matches your interests.

Seoul POPCON is held in COEX Hall C from August 14 to 16. Dates and hall information for the other major events can also be checked on the official COEX schedule.

Seongsu has fashion, beauty, cafés, and pop-up stores scattered across the neighbourhood, so it requires the most care in extreme heat. The key to Seongsu in this Seoul Heatwave Guide is not to circle every alley. Choose a large place where you can stay for a while, such as Olive Young N Seongsu, Amore Seongsu, or Musinsa Mega Store.

Arrive at one space around 11 a.m. for shopping and experiences, eat lunch nearby, and rest fully at a café in the afternoon. If an outdoor queue is long or entry to a pop-up is uncertain, it is better to reduce the itinerary decisively than move to another place.

Beauty and experience events in Seongsu

The Olive Young pop-up runs until August 11, and the Amore Seongsu mystery experience is scheduled until October 18. Musinsa Beauty Festa runs around Seongsu from August 21 to 23 and requires a ticket.

Public facilities in Seongsu may be far from event sites. Before leaving, search Seoul Safety Nuri again for the closest currently operating shelter.

Hongdae is a good fit for travelers who enjoy K-pop, characters, animation, and collaboration cafés. The Hongdae itinerary in this Seoul Heatwave Guide is built around indoor spaces near Hongik University Station, AK Plaza Hongdae, and Hapjeong Station. Do not plan to walk through Hongdae, Yeonnam, Hapjeong, and Mangwon all in the midday heat.

Spend your time around one AK Plaza stop or collaboration café. If the temperature is still high even in the evening, it is safer to skip street browsing.

Yongsan lets you choose between a culture-focused day and a shopping-and-entertainment day. This Seoul Heatwave Guide recommends spending half a day at either the National Museum of Korea or Yongsan I’Park Mall instead of trying to do both in one exhausting day.

Choose the National Museum of Korea if you are interested in Korean culture. During the summer vacation period from July 27 to August 17, opening hours are extended until 6 p.m. on selected weekdays; Wednesdays and Saturdays remain open until 9 p.m. Permanent exhibitions are free, while some special exhibitions are paid.

At the National Museum of Korea, you can currently find The Korean Table, the Thai art special exhibition, and several cultural-heritage exhibitions. I’Park Mall’s short-term pop-ups change often, so check the mall notice or on-site information again just before visiting.

Search the facility name in Seoul Safety Nuri to check whether the community-centre shelter is open and to confirm the hours.

Gangnam is the most convenient. Seongsu needs the most careful movement plan. Hongdae works best when you narrow your interests. Yongsan makes it easy to choose between culture and shopping.

The most important part of using this Seoul Heatwave Guide is not keeping every item on your original itinerary. It is cutting the plan back decisively according to that day’s temperature and your energy.
