Seoul Shopping Malls Compared: The Hyundai Seoul vs COEX Mall vs Lotte World Mall

Seoul has no shortage of huge malls. But if your trip is short, you do not need to visit every one of them.

The Hyundai Seoul, COEX Mall, and Lotte World Mall are all major Seoul shopping malls, but they offer very different kinds of days. One is best for seeing what is trendy in Korea right now, one works beautifully for indoor sightseeing, and one can easily become a full-day destination.

I used to work in Samseong-dong, so COEX was the one I visited most often. I also went to Jamsil regularly for work and appointments, which meant many visits to Lotte World Mall. The Hyundai Seoul came later for me, but it quickly became the place I associate with new brands, pop-ups, food trends, and people watching.

Koreans do not always visit Seoul shopping malls because they need to buy something. We meet friends there, eat, walk, look at what is new, sit down for coffee, and sometimes spend half a day without purchasing much at all.

For travelers, that makes the question more interesting: Which mall is actually worth your time?

73.2%H1 2026 · MALL SPENDING GROWTH

Foreign visitor spending at large shopping malls in Seoul rose sharply in the first half of 2026. That helps explain why Seoul shopping malls are increasingly becoming travel destinations rather than simple places to shop.

If you only look at store directories, many malls can seem similar. The real difference is how people use them.

BEST FOR TRENDS

The Hyundai Seoul

Pop-ups, K-fashion, K-beauty, bakery trends, design, and the feeling of “what Korea likes right now.”

BEST FOR INDOOR SIGHTSEEING

COEX Mall

Starfield Library, aquarium, exhibitions, food, cinema, Gangnam, and Bongeunsa in one practical area.

BEST FOR A FULL DAY

Lotte World Mall

Shopping, Seoul Sky, aquarium, Lotte World, Seokchon Lake, and Songridan-gil around one base.

This is why I would not rank the three Seoul shopping malls from first to third. I would choose one based on the kind of Seoul day you want.

Think of it less as “a department store” and more as a compressed view of current Korean consumer culture. The brands change, the characters change, the pop-ups change, and the food lines change too.

The Hyundai Seoul is the mall I would choose if I wanted a traveler to understand why Koreans can get excited about a new bakery, a character collaboration, a temporary shop, or a brand that did not seem famous six months ago.

Why it feels different

Fashion, beauty, design, desserts, and pop-ups are constantly competing for attention. That makes the mall feel more temporary and changeable than many traditional department stores.

B2 is useful for street fashion, younger labels, and pop-up culture.

B1 is the food-heavy floor where popular bakeries, desserts, and trendy dining pull large crowds.

Sounds Forest on the upper floors gives the building an indoor-garden feeling instead of a typical enclosed mall atmosphere.

Weekday mornings are far calmer than weekend afternoons.

YUNI’S TAKE

If your main question is “What are young Koreans into right now?”, The Hyundai Seoul is the easiest of the three malls to recommend.

What Koreans line up to eat

The Hyundai Seoul pretzel shop with a long line of visitors waiting inside the mall

IF YOU TRY ONE THING

Scallion Pretzel Sandwich

London Bagel Museum is a useful example of Korea’s recent bread-pilgrimage culture. People do not only go for a bagel. They go for the brand, the atmosphere, the texture, the photos, and the feeling of taking part in something everyone is talking about.

Why Koreans like it

Chewy bread, rich cream cheese, strong branding, and the fun of going somewhere that feels culturally “hot.”

Will everyone love it?

Not necessarily. If you come from a place with a strong bagel culture, you may enjoy the Korean reinterpretation more than the idea that it is the “best bagel ever.”

And yes, salt bread

Salt bread is one of my personal favorites. I joke that I judge a bakery by its salt bread. The appeal is simple: butter aroma, a lightly crisp exterior, and a soft, chewy interior. Simple food makes small differences easier to notice.

At The Hyundai Seoul, you do not need a huge meal. A bagel, salt bread, and coffee can already tell you a lot about why food trends have become part of Seoul shopping malls.

STARFIELDCOEX MALL

COEX works best when you treat it as an indoor district rather than one attraction. Starfield Library is the famous image, but the real value comes from combining it with the aquarium, dining, exhibitions, Gangnam, and nearby Bongeunsa.

I used to work nearby, so COEX Mall was part of normal life for me. I went there for lunch, meetings, window-shopping, and the occasional attempt to find a place I had definitely visited before but somehow could not locate again.

Yes, COEX can feel like a maze

If you get lost easily, you may have the same experience I did. The mall is large, underground, and full of branching corridors. Use the maps and digital directories. They help.

Is Starfield Library worth crossing Seoul for?

If Starfield Library is the only thing you plan to see, my answer is probably: no, no.

It is beautiful and I still understand why travelers want the photo. I take photos there too. But COEX becomes a much stronger plan when you combine several stops:

Starfield Library

COEX Aquarium

Lunch or dinner inside the mall

Bongeunsa across the road

A convention, exhibition, or event if one matches your dates

That is when COEX Mall starts to feel like one of the most practical Seoul shopping malls for a half-day or full-day indoor plan.

What to eat: something surprisingly plain

A VERY KOREAN LUNCH

Hadongkwan Gomtang

After several days of spicy, strongly seasoned Korean food, a bowl of clear beef soup can feel almost shockingly quiet.

Why Koreans like it

Warm broth, rice, beef, green onion, kimchi, and the comfort of a familiar old Seoul name. It is not trying to overwhelm you.

Will everyone love it?

No. Some travelers may find it too mild. That is exactly why it is interesting: not every beloved Korean meal is spicy, sweet, or heavily seasoned.

When I worked around Samseong-dong, places like COEX were useful because you could have a simple workday lunch and then walk straight back into the city. That everyday rhythm is part of what makes Seoul shopping malls interesting to me.

Lotte World Mall — The Easiest Full-Day Complex

LOTTEWORLD MALL

If you want one base for an entire day, Lotte World Mall is the easiest choice. The mall sits beside Seoul Sky, Lotte World, the aquarium, Seokchon Lake, and the restaurants and cafés of Songridan-gil.

Lotte World Mall is the one I would recommend most confidently to families or anyone who wants to reduce travel time between attractions.

Lotte World and Seoul Sky

Lotte World gives you indoor and outdoor attractions in one place, which is especially useful when the weather is unpredictable. Personally, if I am choosing only a theme park, I tend to prefer Everland. But Lotte World is much easier to combine with a Seoul city itinerary.

Seoul Sky adds a completely different experience. If you want a high panoramic view over the city, the Han River, dense apartment districts, and the mountains beyond Seoul, it fits naturally into a Jamsil day.

Step outside the mall: Songridan-gil

This is where I would slightly break the “mall guide” rule. Lotte World Mall has plenty to eat, but if you have time, walk out toward Songridan-gil.

The streets around Seokchon Lake are full of small restaurants, burger places, pasta, Japanese rice bowls, bakeries, dessert cafés, and shops that reflect another side of current Seoul food culture. It gives you a nice contrast between a giant commercial complex and smaller neighborhood businesses.

And walk Seokchon Lake

Enjoy a relaxing lakeside walk with seasonal scenery, city views, cherry blossoms in spring, and easy access to Lotte World Mall and Songridan-gil.

Shopping, attractions, and indoor spaces can become tiring. Seokchon Lake gives you a reset. On one side you see the Lotte World castle across the water; on the other, Lotte World Tower rises above the lake.

YUNI’S TAKE

I always end up taking photos around Seokchon Lake. It is one of those places where modern Seoul suddenly feels open and calm.

What to eat

EASY PICK

Oreno Ramen — Tori Paitan

A rich chicken-based ramen is an easy recommendation if you enjoy concentrated, savory broth. Korean diners have become very specific about ramen styles and specialist shops, so a place known for doing one thing well carries real appeal.

Why Koreans like it

A focused menu, strong specialist identity, and a broth that feels rich without being the same as pork-bone tonkotsu.

Feeling adventurous?

Try Pyeongyang naengmyeon somewhere in the Jamsil area and decide which side of Korea’s “beautifully subtle vs too bland” debate you are on.

Among the three Seoul shopping malls, Lotte World Mall is the one that most naturally turns shopping into a full sightseeing day.

Which Seoul Mall Should You Choose?

At this point, the answer is less about which mall is “best” and more about which kind of Seoul you want to see.

If you want to…
Best choice
Why
See current Korean trends
The Hyundai Seoul
Pop-ups, fashion, beauty, characters, and food trends change quickly.
Spend a rainy or very hot day indoors
COEX Mall
Library, aquarium, dining, cinema, exhibitions, and Gangnam access.
Build a full family day
Lotte World Mall
Theme park, aquarium, Seoul Sky, shopping, and nearby lake walks.
See what Koreans are lining up to eat
All three
Each mall reflects a different kind of food culture and consumer trend.

The food comparison I would remember

Mall

Why Koreans like it
Possible foreign reaction
The Hyundai Seoul
Scallion Pretzel Sandwich
Bread pilgrimage, texture, rich cream cheese, trend culture
Great fun, but not automatically life-changing for serious bagel lovers
COEX Mall
Hadongkwan Gomtang
Comfort, clean broth, rice-and-kimchi rhythm, trusted old brand
May seem surprisingly mild at first
Lotte World Mall
Oreno Ramen Tori Paitan
Specialist-shop culture, rich chicken broth, proven popularity
One of the safer recommendations if you enjoy rich soup
Jamsil challenge
Pyeongyang Naengmyeon

One of Korea’s classic “I don’t get it” foods for first-timers

One thing I would not do is assume that a long Korean queue means every foreign traveler will love the food. People line up because something tastes good, because the brand is trusted, because it is photogenic, because it is new, because there is a limited menu, or simply because everyone is talking about it.

The more interesting question is: Why do Koreans like this right now?

That question turns food into part of the travel experience, and it is one reason I enjoy writing about Seoul shopping malls this way.

Choose The Hyundai Seoul if you want to see what Korea is excited about right now.

Choose COEX Mall if you want shopping, indoor sightseeing, and Gangnam in one convenient plan.

Choose Lotte World Mall if you want a full day with family attractions, a skyline view, shopping, and an easy walk outside.

And even if you are not a serious shopper, Seoul shopping malls can still be worth visiting because they show you what people are eating, buying, photographing, and talking about right now.
